Investors Could Be Concerned With Cango's (NYSE:CANG) Returns On Capital
What trends should we look for it we want to identify stocks that can multiply in value over the long term? Firstly, we'll want to see a proven return on capital employed (ROCE) that is increasing, and secondly, an expanding base of capital employed. If you see this, it typically means it's a company with a great business model and plenty of profitable reinvestment opportunities. In light of that, when we looked at Cango (NYSE:CANG) and its ROCE trend, we weren't exactly thrilled.
Understanding Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)
For those that aren't sure what ROCE is, it measures the amount of pre-tax profits a company can generate from the capital employed in its business. The formula for this calculation on Cango is:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.023 = CN¥175m ÷ (CN¥11b - CN¥3.4b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to December 2021).
So, Cango has an ROCE of 2.3%. In absolute terms, that's a low return and it also under-performs the Online Retail industry average of 12%.

If these investments prove successful, this can bode very well for long term stock performance.
What We Can Learn From Cango's ROCE
In summary, despite lower returns in the short term, we're encouraged to see that Cango is reinvesting for growth and has higher sales as a result.
