Beyond, Inc. (NYSE:BYON) shares have retraced a considerable 27% in the last month, reversing a fair amount of their solid recent performance. Looking at the bigger picture, even after this poor month the stock is up 26% in the last year.

Although its price has dipped substantially, it's still not a stretch to say that Beyond's price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.7x right now seems quite "middle-of-the-road" compared to the Specialty Retail industry in the United States, where the median P/S ratio is around 0.4x. Although, it's not wise to simply ignore the P/S without explanation as investors may be disregarding a distinct opportunity or a costly mistake.

What Does Beyond's Recent Performance Look Like?

While the industry has experienced revenue growth lately, Beyond's revenue has gone into reverse gear, which is not great. Perhaps the market is expecting its poor revenue performance to improve, keeping the P/S from dropping. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a relatively elevated price for a company with this sort of growth profile.

How Is Beyond's Revenue Growth Trending?

There's an inherent assumption that a company should be matching the industry for P/S ratios like Beyond's to be considered reasonable.

Taking a look back first, the company's revenue growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 19%. As a result, revenue from three years ago have also fallen 37% overall. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing revenue over that time.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the nine analysts covering the company suggest revenue should grow by 24% per annum over the next three years. That's shaping up to be materially higher than the 5.6% each year growth forecast for the broader industry.

With this in consideration, we find it intriguing that Beyond's P/S is closely matching its industry peers. It may be that most investors aren't convinced the company can achieve future growth expectations.

The Key Takeaway

With its share price dropping off a cliff, the P/S for Beyond looks to be in line with the rest of the Specialty Retail industry. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-sales ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.

Looking at Beyond's analyst forecasts revealed that its superior revenue outlook isn't giving the boost to its P/S that we would've expected. Perhaps uncertainty in the revenue forecasts are what's keeping the P/S ratio consistent with the rest of the industry. It appears some are indeed anticipating revenue instability, because these conditions should normally provide a boost to the share price.
