Who Has Been Buying Shift Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ:SFT) Shares?
We've lost count of how many times insiders have accumulated shares in a company that goes on to improve markedly. Unfortunately, there are also plenty of examples of share prices declining precipitously after insiders have sold shares. So before you buy or sell Shift Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ:SFT), you may well want to know whether insiders have been buying or selling.
What Is Insider Selling?
It's quite normal to see company insiders, such as board members, trading in company stock, from time to time. However, such insiders must disclose their trading activities, and not trade on inside information.
We would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing. But logic dictates you should pay some attention to whether insiders are buying or selling shares. As Peter Lynch said, 'insiders might sell their shares for any number of reasons, but they buy them for only one: they think the price will rise'.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Shift Technologies
In the last twelve months, the biggest single purchase by an insider was when Chief Operating Officer Sean Foy bought US$101k worth of shares at a price of US$8.10 per share. That implies that an insider found the current price of US$8.50 per share to be enticing. While their view may have changed since the purchase was made, this does at least suggest they have had confidence in the company's future. While we always like to see insider buying, it's less meaningful if the purchases were made at much lower prices, as the opportunity they saw may have passed. The good news for Shift Technologies share holders is that insiders were buying at near the current price.
While Shift Technologies insiders bought shares during the last year, they didn't sell. The average buy price was around US$7.12. It's great to see insiders putting their own cash into the company's stock, albeit at below the recent share price. Insiders at Shift Technologies Have Bought Stock Recently
Over the last three months, we've seen significant insider buying at Shift Technologies. Not only was there no selling that we can see, but they collectively bought US$303k worth of shares. This makes one think the business has some good points.
Insider Ownership of Shift Technologies
I like to look at how many shares insiders own in a company, to help inform my view of how aligned they are with insiders. I reckon it's a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. It appears that Shift Technologies insiders own 3.3% of the company, worth about US$23m. While this is a strong but not outstanding level of insider ownership, it's enough to indicate some alignment between management and smaller shareholders.
So What Do The Shift Technologies Insider Transactions Indicate?
It's certainly positive to see the recent insider purchases. And an analysis of the transactions over the last year also gives us confidence. But on the other hand, the company made a loss during the last year, which makes us a little cautious. Given that insiders also own a fair bit of Shift Technologies we think they are probably pretty confident of a bright future. In addition to knowing about insider transactions going on, it's beneficial to identify the risks facing Shift Technologies.
