Revenues Not Telling The Story For Stitch Fix, Inc. (NASDAQ:SFIX) After Shares Rise 66%

The Stitch Fix, Inc. (NASDAQ:SFIX) share price has done very well over the last month, posting an excellent gain of 66%. But the gains over the last month weren't enough to make shareholders whole, as the share price is still down 3.1% in the last twelve months.

Even after such a large jump in price, you could still be forgiven for feeling indifferent about Stitch Fix's P/S ratio of 0.4x, since the median price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio for the Specialty Retail industry in the United States is about the same. However, investors might be overlooking a clear opportunity or potential setback if there is no rational basis for the P/S.

How Has Stitch Fix Performed Recently?

Stitch Fix hasn't been tracking well recently as its declining revenue compares poorly to other companies, which have seen some growth in their revenues on average. One possibility is that the P/S ratio is moderate because investors think this poor revenue performance will turn around. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a relatively elevated price for a company with this sort of growth profile.

How Is Stitch Fix's Revenue Growth Trending?

Stitch Fix's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver moderate growth, and importantly, perform in line with the industry.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 17% decrease to the company's top line. The last three years don't look nice either as the company has shrunk revenue by 28% in aggregate. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing revenue over that time.

Turning to the outlook, the next three years should generate growth of 2.0% each year as estimated by the ten analysts watching the company. With the industry predicted to deliver 5.7% growth per annum, the company is positioned for a weaker revenue result.

With this in mind, we find it intriguing that Stitch Fix's P/S is closely matching its industry peers. Apparently many investors in the company are less bearish than analysts indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock right now. Maintaining these prices will be difficult to achieve as this level of revenue growth is likely to weigh down the shares eventually.

What Does Stitch Fix's P/S Mean For Investors?

Its shares have lifted substantially and now Stitch Fix's P/S is back within range of the industry median. While the price-to-sales ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of revenue expectations.

When you consider that Stitch Fix's revenue growth estimates are fairly muted compared to the broader industry, it's easy to see why we consider it unexpected to be trading at its current P/S ratio. At present, we aren't confident in the P/S as the predicted future revenues aren't likely to support a more positive sentiment for long. Circumstances like this present a risk to current and prospective investors who may see share prices fall if the low revenue growth impacts the sentiment.

It's always necessary to consider the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 4 warning signs with Stitch Fix, and understanding them should be part of your investment process.
