Hour Loop, Inc. (NASDAQ:HOUR) Might Not Be As Mispriced As It Looks After Plunging 51%
The Hour Loop, Inc. (NASDAQ:HOUR) share price has softened a substantial 51% over the previous 30 days, handing back much of the gains the stock has made lately. Still, a bad month hasn't completely ruined the past year with the stock gaining 94%, which is great even in a bull market.
Even after such a large drop in price, Hour Loop may still be sending bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.7x, since almost half of all companies in the Multiline Retail industry in the United States have P/S ratios greater than 1.4x and even P/S higher than 4x are not unusual. However, the P/S might be low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

How Has Hour Loop Performed Recently?
As an illustration, revenue has deteriorated at Hour Loop over the last year, which is not ideal at all. It might be that many expect the disappointing revenue performance to continue or accelerate, which has repressed the P/S. Those who are bullish on Hour Loop will be hoping that this isn't the case so that they can pick up the stock at a lower valuation.

Hour Loop's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver limited growth, and importantly, perform worse than the industry.
In reviewing the last year of financials, we were disheartened to see the company's revenues fell to the tune of 2.1%. However, a few very strong years before that means that it was still able to grow revenue by an impressive 101% in total over the last three years. Accordingly, while they would have preferred to keep the run going, shareholders would definitely welcome the medium-term rates of revenue growth.
This is in contrast to the rest of the industry, which is expected to grow by 12% over the next year, materially lower than the company's recent medium-term annualised growth rates.
With this information, we find it odd that Hour Loop is trading at a P/S lower than the industry. It looks like most investors are not convinced the company can maintain its recent growth rates.
What We Can Learn From Hour Loop's P/S?
The southerly movements of Hour Loop's shares means its P/S is now sitting at a pretty low level. While the price-to-sales ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of revenue expectations.
We're very surprised to see Hour Loop currently trading on a much lower than expected P/S since its recent three-year growth is higher than the wider industry forecast. When we see strong revenue with faster-than-industry growth, we assume there are some significant underlying risks to the company's ability to make money which is applying downwards pressure on the P/S ratio. It appears many are indeed anticipating revenue instability, because the persistence of these recent medium-term conditions would normally provide a boost to the share price.
