Franchise Group Might Find It Hard To Continue The Dividend
We like to see robust dividend yields, but that doesn't matter if the payment isn't sustainable. Even though Franchise Group is not generating a profit, it is still paying a dividend. Along with this, it is also not generating free cash flows, which raises concerns about the sustainability of the dividend.
Looking forward, earnings per share is forecast to rise by 44.8% over the next year. This is the right direction to be moving, but it is not enough to achieve profitability. Unfortunately, for the dividend to continue at current levels the company definitely needs to get there sooner rather than later.
Franchise Group's Dividend Has Lacked Consistency
Franchise Group has been paying dividends for a while, but the track record isn't stellar. If the company cuts once, it definitely isn't argument against the possibility of it cutting in the future. The dividend has gone from an annual total of $0.64 in 2015 to the most recent total annual payment of $2.50. This means that it has been growing its distributions at 19% per annum over that time. It is great to see strong growth in the dividend payments, but cuts are concerning as it may indicate the payout policy is too ambitious.
The Company Could Face Some Challenges Growing The Dividend
Growing earnings per share could be a mitigating factor when considering the past fluctuations in the dividend. We are encouraged to see that Franchise Group has grown earnings per share at 34% per year over the past five years. While the company hasn't yet recorded a profit, the growth rates are healthy. If the company can turn a profit relatively soon, we can see this becoming a reliable income stock.
Franchise Group's Dividend Doesn't Look Sustainable
Overall, it's nice to see a consistent dividend payment, but we think that longer term, the current level of payment might be unsustainable. Strong earnings growth means Franchise Group has the potential to be a good dividend stock in the future, despite the current payments being at elevated levels. We would be a touch cautious of relying on this stock primarily for the dividend income.
Companies possessing a stable dividend policy will likely enjoy greater investor interest than those suffering from a more inconsistent approach.
