Is Now The Time To Put Innovative Industrial Properties (NYSE:IIPR) On Your Watchlist?
Like a puppy chasing its tail, some new investors often chase 'the next big thing', even if that means buying 'story stocks' without revenue, let alone profit. But the reality is that when a company loses money each year, for long enough, its investors will usually take their share of those losses.
So if you're like me, you might be more interested in profitable, growing companies, like Innovative Industrial Properties (NYSE:IIPR). While that doesn't make the shares worth buying at any price, you can't deny that successful capitalism requires profit, eventually. In comparison, loss making companies act like a sponge for capital - but unlike such a sponge they do not always produce something when squeezed.

How Fast Is Innovative Industrial Properties Growing Its Earnings Per Share?
Over the last three years, Innovative Industrial Properties has grown earnings per share (EPS) like young bamboo after rain; fast, and from a low base. So I don't think the percent growth rate is particularly meaningful. As a result, I'll zoom in on growth over the last year, instead. Innovative Industrial Properties boosted its trailing twelve month EPS from US$3.63 to US$4.33, in the last year. I doubt many would complain about that 19% gain.
One way to double-check a company's growth is to look at how its revenue, and earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) margins are changing. The good news is that Innovative Industrial Properties is growing revenues, and EBIT margins improved by 3.8 percentage points to 65%, over the last year. Ticking those two boxes is a good sign of growth, in my book.

Are Innovative Industrial Properties Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?
It makes me feel more secure owning shares in a company if insiders also own shares, thusly more closely aligning our interests. As a result, I'm encouraged by the fact that insiders own Innovative Industrial Properties shares worth a considerable sum. Indeed, they hold US$49m worth of its stock. That shows significant buy-in, and may indicate conviction in the business strategy. Even though that's only about 1.4% of the company, it's enough money to indicate alignment between the leaders of the business and ordinary shareholders.
Does Innovative Industrial Properties Deserve A Spot On Your Watchlist?
One positive for Innovative Industrial Properties is that it is growing EPS. That's nice to see. If that's not enough on its own, there is also the rather notable levels of insider ownership. That combination appeals to me, for one. So yes, I do think the stock is worth keeping an eye on. What about risks?
