Investors more bullish on Newmark Group (NASDAQ:NMRK) this week as stock grows 3.7%, despite earnings trending downwards over past five years
It might be of some concern to shareholders to see the Newmark Group, Inc. (NASDAQ:NMRK) share price down 10% in the last month. But in stark contrast, the returns over the last half decade have impressed. In fact, the share price is 200% higher today. Generally speaking the long term returns will give you a better idea of business quality than short periods can. The more important question is whether the stock is too cheap or too expensive today.
On the back of a solid 7-day performance, let's check what role the company's fundamentals have played in driving long term shareholder returns.
While markets are a powerful pricing mechanism, share prices reflect investor sentiment, not just underlying business performance. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.
Newmark Group's earnings per share are down 10% per year, despite strong share price performance over five years.
Essentially, it doesn't seem likely that investors are focused on EPS. Because earnings per share don't seem to match up with the share price, we'll take a look at other metrics instead.
We doubt the modest 0.9% dividend yield is attracting many buyers to the stock. On the other hand, Newmark Group's revenue is growing nicely, at a compound rate of 4.6% over the last five years. It's quite possible that management are prioritizing revenue growth over EPS growth at the moment.

What About Dividends?
It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. The TSR incorporates the value of any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings, along with any dividends, based on the assumption that the dividends are reinvested. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. In the case of Newmark Group, it has a TSR of 215% for the last 5 years. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. And there's no prize for guessing that the dividend payments largely explain the divergence!
A Different Perspective
We're pleased to report that Newmark Group shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 18% over one year. And that does include the dividend. Having said that, the five-year TSR of 26% a year, is even better. Potential buyers might understandably feel they've missed the opportunity, but it's always possible business is still firing on all cylinders. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important.
