Do CoStar Group's (NASDAQ:CSGP) Earnings Warrant Your Attention?
Investors are often guided by the idea of discovering 'the next big thing', even if that means buying 'story stocks' without any revenue, let alone profit. Unfortunately, these high risk investments often have little probability of ever paying off, and many investors pay a price to learn their lesson. While a well funded company may sustain losses for years, it will need to generate a profit eventually, or else investors will move on and the company will wither away.
So if this idea of high risk and high reward doesn't suit, you might be more interested in profitable, growing companies, like CoStar Group (NASDAQ:CSGP). Now this is not to say that the company presents the best investment opportunity around, but profitability is a key component to success in business.

How Fast Is CoStar Group Growing?
Generally, companies experiencing growth in earnings per share (EPS) should see similar trends in share price. So it makes sense that experienced investors pay close attention to company EPS when undertaking investment research. CoStar Group managed to grow EPS by 9.7% per year, over three years. That's a pretty good rate, if the company can sustain it.
Careful consideration of revenue growth and earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margins can help inform a view on the sustainability of the recent profit growth. On the revenue front, CoStar Group has done well over the past year, growing revenue by 13% to US$2.4b but EBIT margin figures were less stellar, seeing a decline over the last 12 months. So if EBIT margins can stabilize, this top-line growth should pay off for shareholders.

Are CoStar Group Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?
Since CoStar Group has a market capitalisation of US$35b, we wouldn't expect insiders to hold a large percentage of shares. But we do take comfort from the fact that they are investors in the company. Notably, they have an enviable stake in the company, worth US$367m. This suggests that leadership will be very mindful of shareholders' interests when making decisions!
Does CoStar Group Deserve A Spot On Your Watchlist?
As previously touched on, CoStar Group is a growing business, which is encouraging. To add an extra spark to the fire, significant insider ownership in the company is another highlight. The combination definitely favoured by investors so consider keeping the company on a watchlist. One of Buffett's considerations when discussing businesses is if they are capital light or capital intensive. Generally, a company with a high return on equity is capital light, and can thus fund growth more easily. So you might want to check this graph comparing CoStar Group's ROE with industry peers (and the market at large).
