With EPS Growth And More, Avantor (NYSE:AVTR) Makes An Interesting Case

The excitement of investing in a company that can reverse its fortunes is a big draw for some speculators, so even companies that have no revenue, no profit, and a record of falling short, can manage to find investors. Unfortunately, these high risk investments often have little probability of ever paying off, and many investors pay a price to learn their lesson. While a well funded company may sustain losses for years, it will need to generate a profit eventually, or else investors will move on and the company will wither away.

Despite being in the age of tech-stock blue-sky investing, many investors still adopt a more traditional strategy; buying shares in profitable companies like Avantor (NYSE:AVTR). While profit isn't the sole metric that should be considered when investing, it's worth recognising businesses that can consistently produce it.

How Fast Is Avantor Growing Its Earnings Per Share?

Over the last three years, Avantor has grown earnings per share (EPS) at as impressive rate from a relatively low point, resulting in a three year percentage growth rate that isn't particularly indicative of expected future performance. So it would be better to isolate the growth rate over the last year for our analysis. Avantor boosted its trailing twelve month EPS from US$0.80 to US$0.89, in the last year. That's a 11% gain; respectable growth in the broader scheme of things.

Top-line growth is a great indicator that growth is sustainable, and combined with a high earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margin, it's a great way for a company to maintain a competitive advantage in the market. Avantor maintained stable EBIT margins over the last year, all while growing revenue 4.9% to US$7.6b. That's a real positive.

Are Avantor Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

We would not expect to see insiders owning a large percentage of a US$14b company like Avantor. But we are reassured by the fact they have invested in the company. With a whopping US$69m worth of shares as a group, insiders have plenty riding on the company's success. This would indicate that the goals of shareholders and management are one and the same.

Is Avantor Worth Keeping An Eye On?

As previously touched on, Avantor is a growing business, which is encouraging. If that's not enough on its own, there is also the rather notable levels of insider ownership. These two factors are a huge highlight for the company which should be a strong contender your watchlists. We should say that we've discovered 2 warning signs for Avantor (1 makes us a bit uncomfortable!) that you should be aware of before investing here.
