Veru Inc.'s (NASDAQ:VERU) 27% Price Boost Is Out Of Tune With Revenues
Those holding Veru Inc. (NASDAQ:VERU) shares would be relieved that the share price has rebounded 27% in the last thirty days, but it needs to keep going to repair the recent damage it has caused to investor portfolios. Not all shareholders will be feeling jubilant, since the share price is still down a very disappointing 23% in the last twelve months.
Following the firm bounce in price, Veru's price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 5.5x might make it look like a strong sell right now compared to other companies in the Pharmaceuticals industry in the United States, where around half of the companies have P/S ratios below 3.4x and even P/S below 1x are quite common. However, the P/S might be quite high for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

How Veru Has Been Performing
Recent times have been advantageous for Veru as its revenues have been rising faster than most other companies. It seems the market expects this form will continue into the future, hence the elevated P/S ratio. If not, then existing shareholders might be a little nervous about the viability of the share price.

In order to justify its P/S ratio, Veru would need to produce outstanding growth that's well in excess of the industry.
If we review the last year of revenue growth, the company posted a terrific increase of 22%. Still, revenue has fallen 72% in total from three years ago, which is quite disappointing. Accordingly, shareholders would have felt downbeat about the medium-term rates of revenue growth.
Turning to the outlook, the next three years should bring diminished returns, with revenue decreasing 16% per annum as estimated by the four analysts watching the company. That's not great when the rest of the industry is expected to grow by 20% each year.
In light of this, it's alarming that Veru's P/S sits above the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are hoping for a turnaround in the company's business prospects, but the analyst cohort is not so confident this will happen. Only the boldest would assume these prices are sustainable as these declining revenues are likely to weigh heavily on the share price eventually.
What Does Veru's P/S Mean For Investors?
The strong share price surge has lead to Veru's P/S soaring as well. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-sales ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.
For a company with revenues that are set to decline in the context of a growing industry, Veru's P/S is much higher than we would've anticipated. In cases like this where we see revenue decline on the horizon, we suspect the share price is at risk of following suit, bringing back the high P/S into the realms of suitability. Unless these conditions improve markedly, it'll be a challenging time for shareholders.
