Here's Why We're Not Too Worried About TFF Pharmaceuticals' (NASDAQ:TFFP) Cash Burn Situation
Just because a business does not make any money, does not mean that the stock will go down. For example, although Amazon.com made losses for many years after listing, if you had bought and held the shares since 1999, you would have made a fortune. But while the successes are well known, investors should not ignore the very many unprofitable companies that simply burn through all their cash and collapse.
Given this risk, we thought we'd take a look at whether TFF Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ:TFFP) shareholders should be worried about its cash burn. For the purposes of this article, cash burn is the annual rate at which an unprofitable company spends cash to fund its growth; its negative free cash flow. First, we'll determine its cash runway by comparing its cash burn with its cash reserves.

When Might TFF Pharmaceuticals Run Out Of Money?
A cash runway is defined as the length of time it would take a company to run out of money if it kept spending at its current rate of cash burn. When TFF Pharmaceuticals last reported its balance sheet in September 2021, it had zero debt and cash worth US$45m. In the last year, its cash burn was US$26m. So it had a cash runway of approximately 20 months from September 2021. Notably, analysts forecast that TFF Pharmaceuticals will break even (at a free cash flow level) in about 3 years. Essentially, that means the company will either reduce its cash burn, or else require more cash. The image below shows how its cash balance has been changing over the last few years.
How Is TFF Pharmaceuticals' Cash Burn Changing Over Time?
Whilst it's great to see that TFF Pharmaceuticals has already begun generating revenue from operations, last year it only produced US$76k, so we don't think it is generating significant revenue, at this point. Therefore, for the purposes of this analysis we'll focus on how the cash burn is tracking. Over the last year its cash burn actually increased by a very significant 77%. While this spending increase is no doubt intended to drive growth, if the trend continues the company's cash runway will shrink very quickly. Clearly, however, the crucial factor is whether the company will grow its business going forward. So you might want to take a peek at how much the company is expected to grow in the next few years.
How Easily Can TFF Pharmaceuticals Raise Cash?
Given its cash burn trajectory, TFF Pharmaceuticals shareholders may wish to consider how easily it could raise more cash, despite its solid cash runway. Companies can raise capital through either debt or equity. Many companies end up issuing new shares to fund future growth. By comparing a company's annual cash burn to its total market capitalisation, we can estimate roughly how many shares it would have to issue in order to run the company for another year (at the same burn rate).
TFF Pharmaceuticals has a market capitalisation of US$220m and burnt through US$26m last year, which is 12% of the company's market value. As a result, we'd venture that the company could raise more cash for growth without much trouble, albeit at the cost of some dilution.
So, Should We Worry About TFF Pharmaceuticals' Cash Burn?
Even though its increasing cash burn makes us a little nervous, we are compelled to mention that we thought TFF Pharmaceuticals' cash burn relative to its market cap was relatively promising.
