Shareholders in Sangamo Therapeutics, Inc. (NASDAQ:SGMO) may be thrilled to learn that the analysts have just delivered a major upgrade to their near-term forecasts. The consensus statutory numbers for both revenue and earnings per share (EPS) increased, with their view clearly much more bullish on the company's business prospects. The stock price has risen 4.7% to US$0.55 over the past week, suggesting investors are becoming more optimistic. Whether the upgrade is enough to drive the stock price higher is yet to be seen, however.

Following the upgrade, the most recent consensus for Sangamo Therapeutics from its seven analysts is for revenues of US$43m in 2024 which, if met, would be a huge 128% increase on its sales over the past 12 months. The loss per share is anticipated to greatly reduce in the near future, narrowing 72% to US$0.44. However, before this estimates update, the consensus had been expecting revenues of US$37m and US$0.50 per share in losses. So there's been quite a change-up of views after the recent consensus updates, with the analysts making a sizeable increase to their revenue forecasts while also reducing the estimated loss as the business grows towards breakeven.

Looking at the bigger picture now, one of the ways we can make sense of these forecasts is to see how they measure up against both past performance and industry growth estimates. The analysts are definitely expecting Sangamo Therapeutics' growth to accelerate, with the forecast 201% annualised growth to the end of 2024 ranking favourably alongside historical growth of 11% per annum over the past five years. Compare this with other companies in the same industry, which are forecast to grow their revenue 18% annually. It seems obvious that, while the growth outlook is brighter than the recent past, the analysts also expect Sangamo Therapeutics to grow faster than the wider industry.

The Bottom Line

The highlight for us was that the consensus reduced its estimated losses this year, perhaps suggesting Sangamo Therapeutics is moving incrementally towards profitability. They also upgraded their revenue estimates for this year, and sales are expected to grow faster than the wider market. The clear improvement in sentiment should be enough to get most shareholders feeling more optimistic about Sangamo Therapeutics' future.
