Sangamo Therapeutics, Inc. (NASDAQ:SGMO) Looks Inexpensive After Falling 25% But Perhaps Not Attractive Enough

To the annoyance of some shareholders, Sangamo Therapeutics, Inc. (NASDAQ:SGMO) shares are down a considerable 25% in the last month, which continues a horrid run for the company. Longer-term shareholders would now have taken a real hit with the stock declining 9.8% in the last year.

After such a large drop in price, Sangamo Therapeutics may be sending very bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 3.7x, since almost half of all companies in the Biotechs industry in the United States have P/S ratios greater than 9x and even P/S higher than 49x are not unusual. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so limited.

What Does Sangamo Therapeutics' P/S Mean For Shareholders?

Sangamo Therapeutics hasn't been tracking well recently as its declining revenue compares poorly to other companies, which have seen some growth in their revenues on average. Perhaps the P/S remains low as investors think the prospects of strong revenue growth aren't on the horizon. So while you could say the stock is cheap, investors will be looking for improvement before they see it as good value.

What Are Revenue Growth Metrics Telling Us About The Low P/S?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as depressed as Sangamo Therapeutics' is when the company's growth is on track to lag the industry decidedly.

In reviewing the last year of financials, we were disheartened to see the company's revenues fell to the tune of 74%. The last three years don't look nice either as the company has shrunk revenue by 52% in aggregate. Accordingly, shareholders would have felt downbeat about the medium-term rates of revenue growth.

Looking ahead now, revenue is anticipated to climb by 26% per annum during the coming three years according to the seven analysts following the company. That's shaping up to be materially lower than the 128% per year growth forecast for the broader industry.

With this in consideration, its clear as to why Sangamo Therapeutics' P/S is falling short industry peers. Apparently many shareholders weren't comfortable holding on while the company is potentially eyeing a less prosperous future.

What Does Sangamo Therapeutics' P/S Mean For Investors?

Shares in Sangamo Therapeutics have plummeted and its P/S has followed suit. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-sales ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.

We've established that Sangamo Therapeutics maintains its low P/S on the weakness of its forecast growth being lower than the wider industry, as expected. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/S as they concede future revenue probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. It's hard to see the share price rising strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
