Repligen Corporation (NASDAQ:RGEN) Stocks Shoot Up 27% But Its P/S Still Looks Reasonable
Repligen Corporation (NASDAQ:RGEN) shares have had a really impressive month, gaining 27% after a shaky period beforehand. But the gains over the last month weren't enough to make shareholders whole, as the share price is still down 3.9% in the last twelve months.
Since its price has surged higher, you could be forgiven for thinking Repligen is a stock to steer clear of with a price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") of 14.8x, considering almost half the companies in the United States' Life Sciences industry have P/S ratios below 3.7x. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so lofty.

What Does Repligen's P/S Mean For Shareholders?
Recent times haven't been great for Repligen as its revenue has been falling quicker than most other companies. One possibility is that the P/S ratio is high because investors think the company will turn things around completely and accelerate past most others in the industry. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as steep as Repligen's is when the company's growth is on track to outshine the industry decidedly.
In reviewing the last year of financials, we were disheartened to see the company's revenues fell to the tune of 22%. Still, the latest three year period has seen an excellent 40% overall rise in revenue, in spite of its unsatisfying short-term performance. So we can start by confirming that the company has generally done a very good job of growing revenue over that time, even though it had some hiccups along the way.
Looking ahead now, revenue is anticipated to climb by 14% per annum during the coming three years according to the eleven analysts following the company. With the industry only predicted to deliver 7.0% per year, the company is positioned for a stronger revenue result.
In light of this, it's understandable that Repligen's P/S sits above the majority of other companies. Apparently shareholders aren't keen to offload something that is potentially eyeing a more prosperous future.
The Bottom Line On Repligen's P/S
The strong share price surge has lead to Repligen's P/S soaring as well. While the price-to-sales ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of revenue expectations.
As we suspected, our examination of Repligen's analyst forecasts revealed that its superior revenue outlook is contributing to its high P/S. Right now shareholders are comfortable with the P/S as they are quite confident future revenues aren't under threat. Unless the analysts have really missed the mark, these strong revenue forecasts should keep the share price buoyant.
