Insiders who bought US$54.7m worth of ProKidney Corp. (NASDAQ:PROK) stock in the last year have seen some of their losses recouped as the stock gained 13% last week. However, total losses seen by insiders are still US$14m since the time of purchase.

While insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At ProKidney

Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider purchase was by Chairman of the Board Pablo Legorreta for US$55m worth of shares, at about US$2.42 per share. So it's clear an insider wanted to buy, even at a higher price than the current share price (being US$1.79). Their view may have changed since then, but at least it shows they felt optimistic at the time. In our view, the price an insider pays for shares is very important. It is encouraging to see an insider paid above the current price for shares, as it suggests they saw value, even at higher levels. Pablo Legorreta was the only individual insider to buy shares in the last twelve months.

Another way to test the alignment between the leaders of a company and other shareholders is to look at how many shares they own. Usually, the higher the insider ownership, the more likely it is that insiders will be incentivised to build the company for the long term. Insiders own 9.2% of ProKidney shares, worth about US$45m. While this is a strong but not outstanding level of insider ownership, it's enough to indicate some alignment between management and smaller shareholders.
