What Moderna, Inc.'s (NASDAQ:MRNA) 27% Share Price Gain Is Not Telling You

Moderna, Inc. (NASDAQ:MRNA) shares have continued their recent momentum with a 27% gain in the last month alone. Looking further back, the 23% rise over the last twelve months isn't too bad notwithstanding the strength over the last 30 days.

Even after such a large jump in price, you could still be forgiven for feeling indifferent about Moderna's P/S ratio of 11.5x, since the median price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio for the Biotechs industry in the United States is also close to 12.4x. While this might not raise any eyebrows, if the P/S ratio is not justified investors could be missing out on a potential opportunity or ignoring looming disappointment.

How Moderna Has Been Performing

While the industry has experienced revenue growth lately, Moderna's revenue has gone into reverse gear, which is not great. One possibility is that the P/S ratio is moderate because investors think this poor revenue performance will turn around. If not, then existing shareholders may be a little nervous about the viability of the share price.

How Is Moderna's Revenue Growth Trending?

Moderna's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver moderate growth, and importantly, perform in line with the industry.

In reviewing the last year of financials, we were disheartened to see the company's revenues fell to the tune of 66%. Still, the latest three year period has seen an excellent 89% overall rise in revenue, in spite of its unsatisfying short-term performance. So we can start by confirming that the company has generally done a very good job of growing revenue over that time, even though it had some hiccups along the way.

Looking ahead now, revenue is anticipated to climb by 11% per year during the coming three years according to the analysts following the company. Meanwhile, the rest of the industry is forecast to expand by 208% each year, which is noticeably more attractive.

With this information, we find it interesting that Moderna is trading at a fairly similar P/S compared to the industry. It seems most investors are ignoring the fairly limited growth expectations and are willing to pay up for exposure to the stock. Maintaining these prices will be difficult to achieve as this level of revenue growth is likely to weigh down the shares eventually.

The Final Word

Its shares have lifted substantially and now Moderna's P/S is back within range of the industry median. Using the price-to-sales ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.

Our look at the analysts forecasts of Moderna's revenue prospects has shown that its inferior revenue outlook isn't negatively impacting its P/S as much as we would have predicted. When we see companies with a relatively weaker revenue outlook compared to the industry, we suspect the share price is at risk of declining, sending the moderate P/S lower. A positive change is needed in order to justify the current price-to-sales ratio.
