Moderna Insiders Sell US$3.3m Of Stock, Possibly Signalling Caution

In the last year, many Moderna, Inc. (NASDAQ:MRNA) insiders sold a substantial stake in the company which may have sparked shareholders' attention. When analyzing insider transactions, it is usually more valuable to know whether insiders are buying versus knowing if they are selling, as the latter sends an ambiguous message. However, when multiple insiders sell stock over a specific duration, shareholders should take notice as that could possibly be a red flag.

While insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing, logic dictates you should pay some attention to whether insiders are buying or selling shares.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Moderna

The CEO & Director, Stephane Bancel, made the biggest insider sale in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for US$2.3m worth of shares at a price of US$88.88 each. We generally don't like to see insider selling, but the lower the sale price, the more it concerns us. The good news is that this large sale was at well above current price of US$42.25. So it is hard to draw any strong conclusion from it.

Insider Ownership Of Moderna

Many investors like to check how much of a company is owned by insiders. I reckon it's a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. Moderna insiders own 9.6% of the company, currently worth about US$1.6b based on the recent share price. I like to see this level of insider ownership, because it increases the chances that management are thinking about the best interests of shareholders.

What Might The Insider Transactions At Moderna Tell Us?

The fact that there have been no Moderna insider transactions recently certainly doesn't bother us. It's great to see high levels of insider ownership, but looking back over the last year, we don't gain confidence from the Moderna insiders selling. Of course, the future is what matters most.
