Analyst Forecasts For MacroGenics, Inc. (NASDAQ:MGNX) Are Surging Higher
MacroGenics, Inc. (NASDAQ:MGNX) shareholders will have a reason to smile today, with the analysts making substantial upgrades to next year's forecasts. The consensus statutory numbers for both revenue and earnings per share (EPS) increased, with their view clearly much more bullish on the company's business prospects.
After this upgrade, MacroGenics' ten analysts are now forecasting revenues of US$124m in 2023. This would be a huge 34% improvement in sales compared to the last 12 months. Losses are predicted to fall substantially, shrinking 36% to US$1.99. However, before this estimates update, the consensus had been expecting revenues of US$95m and US$2.25 per share in losses. So there's been quite a change-up of views after the recent consensus updates, with the analysts making a sizeable increase to their revenue forecasts while also reducing the estimated loss as the business grows towards breakeven.

There was no major change to the consensus price target of US$10.60, perhaps suggesting that the analysts remain concerned about ongoing losses despite the improved earnings and revenue outlook. The consensus price target is just an average of individual analyst targets, so - it could be handy to see how wide the range of underlying estimates is. Currently, the most bullish analyst values MacroGenics at US$17.00 per share, while the most bearish prices it at US$6.00. We would probably assign less value to the forecasts in this situation, because such a wide range of estimates could imply that the future of this business is difficult to value accurately. As a result it might not be possible to derive much meaning from the consensus price target, which is after all just an average of this wide range of estimates.
Looking at the bigger picture now, one of the ways we can make sense of these forecasts is to see how they measure up against both past performance and industry growth estimates. One thing stands out from these estimates, which is that MacroGenics is forecast to grow faster in the future than it has in the past, with revenues expected to display 26% annualised growth until the end of 2023. If achieved, this would be a much better result than the 6.7% annual decline over the past five years. Compare this against analyst estimates for the broader industry, which suggest that (in aggregate) industry revenues are expected to grow 14% annually. So it looks like MacroGenics is expected to grow faster than its competitors, at least for a while.
The Bottom Line
The highlight for us was that the consensus reduced its estimated losses next year, perhaps suggesting MacroGenics is moving incrementally towards profitability. They also upgraded their revenue estimates for next year, and sales are expected to grow faster than the wider market. Some investors might be disappointed to see that the price target is unchanged, but we feel that improving fundamentals are usually a positive - assuming these forecasts are met! So MacroGenics could be a good candidate for more research.
Still, the long-term prospects of the business are much more relevant than next year's earnings. We have estimates - from multiple MacroGenics analysts - going out to 2025, and you can see them free on our platform here.
