Investors are often guided by the idea of discovering 'the next big thing', even if that means buying 'story stocks' without any revenue, let alone profit. Are Medpace Holdings Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

It's said that there's no smoke without fire. For investors, insider buying is often the smoke that indicates which stocks could set the market alight. Because often, the purchase of stock is a sign that the buyer views it as undervalued. However, insiders are sometimes wrong, and we don't know the exact thinking behind their acquisitions.

The US$458k worth of shares that insiders sold during the last 12 months pales in comparison to the US$25m they spent on acquiring shares in the company. This bodes well for Medpace Holdings as it highlights the fact that those who are important to the company having a lot of faith in its future. Zooming in, we can see that the biggest insider purchase was by Chairman & CEO August Troendle for US$15m worth of shares, at about US$157 per share.

The good news, alongside the insider buying, for Medpace Holdings bulls is that insiders (collectively) have a meaningful investment in the stock. Indeed, they have a considerable amount of wealth invested in it, currently valued at US$1.5b. That equates to 24% of the company, making insiders powerful and aligned with other shareholders. Very encouraging.

While insiders are apparently happy to hold and accumulate shares, that is just part of the big picture. That's because on our analysis the CEO, August Troendle, is paid less than the median for similar sized companies. The median total compensation for CEOs of companies similar in size to Medpace Holdings, with market caps between US$4.0b and US$12b, is around US$8.4m.

The Medpace Holdings CEO received US$5.9m in compensation for the year ending December 2021. That seems pretty reasonable, especially given it's below the median for similar sized companies. While the level of CEO compensation shouldn't be the biggest factor in how the company is viewed, modest remuneration is a positive, because it suggests that the board keeps shareholder interests in mind. It can also be a sign of a culture of integrity, in a broader sense.
