MediWound Ltd. (NASDAQ:MDWD) shares have had a really impressive month, gaining 43% after a shaky period beforehand. The annual gain comes to 101% following the latest surge, making investors sit up and take notice.

Following the firm bounce in price, MediWound may be sending very bearish signals at the moment with a price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 9x, since almost half of all companies in the Pharmaceuticals industry in the United States have P/S ratios under 3x and even P/S lower than 0.8x are not unusual. However, the P/S might be quite high for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

What Does MediWound's P/S Mean For Shareholders?

MediWound hasn't been tracking well recently as its declining revenue compares poorly to other companies, which have seen some growth in their revenues on average. One possibility is that the P/S ratio is high because investors think this poor revenue performance will turn the corner. If not, then existing shareholders may be extremely nervous about the viability of the share price.

Keen to find out how analysts think MediWound's future stacks up against the industry? In that case, our free report is a great place to start.

What Are Revenue Growth Metrics Telling Us About The High P/S?

In order to justify its P/S ratio, MediWound would need to produce outstanding growth that's well in excess of the industry.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 23% decrease to the company's top line. This means it has also seen a slide in revenue over the longer-term as revenue is down 14% in total over the last three years. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing revenue over that time.

Looking ahead now, revenue is anticipated to climb by 41% per annum during the coming three years according to the four analysts following the company. Meanwhile, the rest of the industry is forecast to only expand by 20% each year, which is noticeably less attractive.

With this in mind, it's not hard to understand why MediWound's P/S is high relative to its industry peers. It seems most investors are expecting this strong future growth and are willing to pay more for the stock.

The Final Word

The strong share price surge has lead to MediWound's P/S soaring as well. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-sales ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.

Our look into MediWound shows that its P/S ratio remains high on the merit of its strong future revenues. At this stage investors feel the potential for a deterioration in revenues is quite remote, justifying the elevated P/S ratio. Unless these conditions change, they will continue to provide strong support to the share price.
