Legend Biotech Corporation's (NASDAQ:LEGN) price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 27.6x might make it look like a strong sell right now compared to the Biotechs industry in the United States, where around half of the companies have P/S ratios below 12.5x and even P/S below 4x are quite common. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the highly elevated P/S.

What Does Legend Biotech's P/S Mean For Shareholders?

With revenue growth that's superior to most other companies of late, Legend Biotech has been doing relatively well. It seems the market expects this form will continue into the future, hence the elevated P/S ratio. If not, then existing shareholders might be a little nervous about the viability of the share price.

Keen to find out how analysts think Legend Biotech's future stacks up against the industry? In that case, our free report is a great place to start.

Is There Enough Revenue Growth Forecasted For Legend Biotech?

In order to justify its P/S ratio, Legend Biotech would need to produce outstanding growth that's well in excess of the industry.

If we review the last year of revenue growth, the company posted a terrific increase of 144%. The latest three year period has also seen an excellent 280% overall rise in revenue, aided by its short-term performance. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been superb for the company.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the analysts covering the company suggest revenue should grow by 79% each year over the next three years. That's shaping up to be materially lower than the 210% per year growth forecast for the broader industry.

In light of this, it's alarming that Legend Biotech's P/S sits above the majority of other companies. Apparently many investors in the company are way more bullish than analysts indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock at any price. Only the boldest would assume these prices are sustainable as this level of revenue growth is likely to weigh heavily on the share price eventually.

What Does Legend Biotech's P/S Mean For Investors?

Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-sales ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.

It comes as a surprise to see Legend Biotech trade at such a high P/S given the revenue forecasts look less than stellar. The weakness in the company's revenue estimate doesn't bode well for the elevated P/S, which could take a fall if the revenue sentiment doesn't improve. Unless these conditions improve markedly, it's very challenging to accept these prices as being reasonable.
