There's No Escaping FibroGen, Inc.'s (NASDAQ:FGEN) Muted Revenues Despite A 148% Share Price Rise
Despite an already strong run, FibroGen, Inc. (NASDAQ:FGEN) shares have been powering on, with a gain of 148% in the last thirty days. Still, the 30-day jump doesn't change the fact that longer term shareholders have seen their stock decimated by the 93% share price drop in the last twelve months.
In spite of the firm bounce in price, FibroGen may still be sending very bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 1.2x, since almost half of all companies in the Biotechs industry in the United States have P/S ratios greater than 13.7x and even P/S higher than 56x are not unusual. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the highly reduced P/S.

How FibroGen Has Been Performing
Recent times haven't been great for FibroGen as its revenue has been rising slower than most other companies. It seems that many are expecting the uninspiring revenue performance to persist, which has repressed the growth of the P/S ratio. If this is the case, then existing shareholders will probably struggle to get excited about the future direction of the share price.

FibroGen's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver very poor growth or even falling revenue, and importantly, perform much worse than the industry.
If we review the last year of revenue growth, the company posted a terrific increase of 26%. The latest three year period has also seen a 30% overall rise in revenue, aided extensively by its short-term performance. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been respectable for the company.
Turning to the outlook, the next year should generate growth of 5.0% as estimated by the three analysts watching the company. That's shaping up to be materially lower than the 694% growth forecast for the broader industry.
With this in consideration, its clear as to why FibroGen's P/S is falling short industry peers. Apparently many shareholders weren't comfortable holding on while the company is potentially eyeing a less prosperous future.
The Final Word
FibroGen's recent share price jump still sees fails to bring its P/S alongside the industry median. It's argued the price-to-sales ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.
We've established that FibroGen maintains its low P/S on the weakness of its forecast growth being lower than the wider industry, as expected. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in revenue isn't great enough to justify a higher P/S ratio. It's hard to see the share price rising strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
