It is not uncommon to see companies perform well in the years after insiders buy shares. On the other hand, we'd be remiss not to mention that insider sales have been known to precede tough periods for a business. So we'll take a look at whether insiders have been buying or selling shares in CASI Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (NASDAQ:CASI).

What Is Insider Buying?

It's quite normal to see company insiders, such as board members, trading in company stock, from time to time. However, rules govern insider transactions, and certain disclosures are required.

Insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing. But it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing. As Peter Lynch said, 'insiders might sell their shares for any number of reasons, but they buy them for only one: they think the price will rise'.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At CASI Pharmaceuticals

Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider purchase was by Chairman & CEO Wei-Wu He for US$5.6m worth of shares, at about US$1.90 per share. Even though the purchase was made at a significantly lower price than the recent price (US$2.41), we still think insider buying is a positive. Because it occurred at a lower valuation, it doesn't tell us much about whether insiders might find today's price attractive.

CASI Pharmaceuticals Insiders Bought Stock Recently

We saw some CASI Pharmaceuticals insider buying shares in the last three months. CFO & Principal Accounting Officer Weihao Xu purchased US$15k worth of shares in that period. We like it when there are only buyers, and no sellers. However, in this case the amount invested recently is quite small.

Insider Ownership

Another way to test the alignment between the leaders of a company and other shareholders is to look at how many shares they own. Usually, the higher the insider ownership, the more likely it is that insiders will be incentivised to build the company for the long term. It appears that CASI Pharmaceuticals insiders own 5.5% of the company, worth about US$17m. This level of insider ownership is good but just short of being particularly stand-out. It certainly does suggest a reasonable degree of alignment.

So What Does This Data Suggest About CASI Pharmaceuticals Insiders?

Our data shows a little insider buying, but no selling, in the last three months. That said, the purchases were not large. But insiders have shown more of an appetite for the stock, over the last year. Insiders own shares in CASI Pharmaceuticals and we see no evidence to suggest they are worried about the future.
