Is Capricor Therapeutics (NASDAQ:CAPR) In A Good Position To Invest In Growth?
Even when a business is losing money, it's possible for shareholders to make money if they buy a good business at the right price. For example, although software-as-a-service business Salesforce.com lost money for years while it grew recurring revenue, if you held shares since 2005, you'd have done very well indeed. But while the successes are well known, investors should not ignore the very many unprofitable companies that simply burn through all their cash and collapse.
So, the natural question for Capricor Therapeutics (NASDAQ:CAPR) shareholders is whether they should be concerned by its rate of cash burn. In this article, we define cash burn as its annual (negative) free cash flow, which is the amount of money a company spends each year to fund its growth. The first step is to compare its cash burn with its cash reserves, to give us its 'cash runway'.

Does Capricor Therapeutics Have A Long Cash Runway?
A cash runway is defined as the length of time it would take a company to run out of money if it kept spending at its current rate of cash burn. As at September 2023, Capricor Therapeutics had cash of US$29m and no debt. In the last year, its cash burn was US$23m. So it had a cash runway of approximately 15 months from September 2023. While that cash runway isn't too concerning, sensible holders would be peering into the distance, and considering what happens if the company runs out of cash. You can see how its cash balance has changed over time in the image below.
Is Capricor Therapeutics' Revenue Growing?
We're hesitant to extrapolate on the recent trend to assess its cash burn, because Capricor Therapeutics actually had positive free cash flow last year, so operating revenue growth is probably our best bet to measure, right now. Happily, its operating revenue increased by 783%, which is nice to see, just like a shooting star. Clearly, however, the crucial factor is whether the company will grow its business going forward. For that reason, it makes a lot of sense to take a look at our analyst forecasts for the company.
Can Capricor Therapeutics Raise More Cash Easily?
There's no doubt Capricor Therapeutics' revenue growth is impressive but even if it's only hypothetical, it's always worth asking how easily it could raise more money to fund further growth. Companies can raise capital through either debt or equity. Commonly, a business will sell new shares in itself to raise cash and drive growth. We can compare a company's cash burn to its market capitalisation to get a sense for how many new shares a company would have to issue to fund one year's operations.
Capricor Therapeutics' cash burn of US$23m is about 20% of its US$119m market capitalisation. As a result, we'd venture that the company could raise more cash for growth without much trouble, albeit at the cost of some dilution.
So, Should We Worry About Capricor Therapeutics' Cash Burn?
Capricor Therapeutics appears to be in pretty good health when it comes to its cash burn situation. One the one hand we have its solid cash runway, while on the other it can also boast very strong revenue growth. Cash burning companies are always on the riskier side of things, but after considering all of the factors discussed in this short piece, we're not too worried about its rate of cash burn. On another note, we conducted an in-depth investigation of the company, and identified 4 warning signs for Capricor Therapeutics (2 shouldn't be ignored!) that you should be aware of before investing here.
