What Does The Institutional Ownership Tell Us About AlloVir?

Institutions typically measure themselves against a benchmark when reporting to their own investors, so they often become more enthusiastic about a stock once it's included in a major index. We would expect most companies to have some institutions on the register, especially if they are growing.

AlloVir already has institutions on the share registry. Indeed, they own a respectable stake in the company. This implies the analysts working for those institutions have looked at the stock and they like it. But just like anyone else, they could be wrong. If multiple institutions change their view on a stock at the same time, you could see the share price drop fast. It's therefore worth looking at AlloVir's earnings history below. Of course, the future is what really matters.

We note that hedge funds don't have a meaningful investment in AlloVir. The company's largest shareholder is ElevateBio, LLC, with ownership of 22%. FMR LLC is the second largest shareholder owning 11% of common stock, and Morana Jovan-Embiricos holds about 8.1% of the company stock. Morana Jovan-Embiricos, who is the third-largest shareholder, also happens to hold the title of Member of the Board of Directors. In addition, we found that David Hallal, the CEO has 5.2% of the shares allocated to their name.

On looking further, we found that 51% of the shares are owned by the top 5 shareholders. In other words, these shareholders have a meaningful say in the decisions of the company.

Researching institutional ownership is a good way to gauge and filter a stock's expected performance. The same can be achieved by studying analyst sentiments. There are a reasonable number of analysts covering the stock, so it might be useful to find out their aggregate view on the future.

Insider Ownership Of AlloVir

The definition of an insider can differ slightly between different countries, but members of the board of directors always count. The company management answer to the board and the latter should represent the interests of shareholders. Notably, sometimes top-level managers are on the board themselves.

I generally consider insider ownership to be a good thing. However, on some occasions it makes it more difficult for other shareholders to hold the board accountable for decisions.

It seems insiders own a significant proportion of AlloVir, Inc.. It is very interesting to see that insiders have a meaningful US$773m stake in this US$2.5b business. The general public holds a 11% stake in AlloVir. This size of ownership, while considerable, may not be enough to change company policy if the decision is not in sync with other large shareholders.
