Downgrade: Here's How Analysts See Adicet Bio, Inc. (NASDAQ:ACET) Performing In The Near Term
The latest analyst coverage could presage a bad day for Adicet Bio, Inc. (NASDAQ:ACET), with the analysts making across-the-board cuts to their statutory estimates that might leave shareholders a little shell-shocked. Both revenue and earnings per share (EPS) forecasts went under the knife, suggesting analysts have soured majorly on the business.
Following the downgrade, the consensus from nine analysts covering Adicet Bio is for revenues of US$26m in 2022, implying a disturbing 24% decline in sales compared to the last 12 months. Losses are supposed to balloon 36% to US$1.53 per share. Yet before this consensus update, the analysts had been forecasting revenues of US$39m and losses of US$1.08 per share in 2022. So there's been quite a change-up of views after the recent consensus updates, with the analysts making a serious cut to their revenue forecasts while also expecting losses per share to increase.

There was no major change to the consensus price target of US$28.78, signalling that the business is performing roughly in line with expectations, despite lower earnings per share forecasts. Fixating on a single price target can be unwise though, since the consensus target is effectively the average of analyst price targets. As a result, some investors like to look at the range of estimates to see if there are any diverging opinions on the company's valuation. Currently, the most bullish analyst values Adicet Bio at US$34.00 per share, while the most bearish prices it at US$21.00. Analysts definitely have varying views on the business, but the spread of estimates is not wide enough in our view to suggest that extreme outcomes could await Adicet Bio shareholders.
Another way we can view these estimates is in the context of the bigger picture, such as how the forecasts stack up against past performance, and whether forecasts are more or less bullish relative to other companies in the industry. These estimates imply that sales are expected to slow, with a forecast annualised revenue decline of 42% by the end of 2022. This indicates a significant reduction from annual growth of 266% over the last year. By contrast, our data suggests that other companies (with analyst coverage) in the same industry are forecast to see their revenue grow 15% annually for the foreseeable future. It's pretty clear that Adicet Bio's revenues are expected to perform substantially worse than the wider industry.
The Bottom Line
The most important thing to take away is that analysts increased their loss per share estimates for this year. Unfortunately analysts also downgraded their revenue estimates, and industry data suggests that Adicet Bio's revenues are expected to grow slower than the wider market. We're also surprised to see that the price target went unchanged. Still, deteriorating business conditions (assuming accurate forecasts!) can be a leading indicator for the stock price, so we wouldn't blame investors for being more cautious on Adicet Bio after the downgrade.
Even so, the longer term trajectory of the business is much more important for the value creation of shareholders. We have estimates - from multiple Adicet Bio analysts - going out to 2024, and you can see them free on our platform here.
