System1, Inc. (NYSE:SST) Not Doing Enough For Some Investors As Its Shares Slump 35%
System1, Inc. (NYSE:SST) shares have retraced a considerable 35% in the last month, reversing a fair amount of their solid recent performance. The recent drop completes a disastrous twelve months for shareholders, who are sitting on a 56% loss during that time.
Following the heavy fall in price, System1 may be sending bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.1x, since almost half of all companies in the Interactive Media and Services industry in the United States have P/S ratios greater than 1.4x and even P/S higher than 4x are not unusual. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.

What Does System1's P/S Mean For Shareholders?
While the industry has experienced revenue growth lately, System1's revenue has gone into reverse gear, which is not great. The P/S ratio is probably low because investors think this poor revenue performance isn't going to get any better. So while you could say the stock is cheap, investors will be looking for improvement before they see it as good value.

System1's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver limited growth, and importantly, perform worse than the industry.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 8.8% decrease to the company's top line. As a result, revenue from three years ago have also fallen 56% overall. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing revenue over that time.
Shifting to the future, estimates from the sole analyst covering the company suggest revenue growth is heading into negative territory, declining 1.2% over the next year. That's not great when the rest of the industry is expected to grow by 12%.
With this information, we are not surprised that System1 is trading at a P/S lower than the industry. Nonetheless, there's no guarantee the P/S has reached a floor yet with revenue going in reverse. There's potential for the P/S to fall to even lower levels if the company doesn't improve its top-line growth.
What We Can Learn From System1's P/S?
System1's P/S has taken a dip along with its share price. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-sales ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.
With revenue forecasts that are inferior to the rest of the industry, it's no surprise that System1's P/S is on the lower end of the spectrum. As other companies in the industry are forecasting revenue growth, System1's poor outlook justifies its low P/S ratio. Unless these conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.
