Snap Inc.'s (NYSE:SNAP) Stock Retreats 41% But Revenues Haven't Escaped The Attention Of Investors

The Snap Inc. (NYSE:SNAP) share price has fared very poorly over the last month, falling by a substantial 41%. The drop over the last 30 days has capped off a tough year for shareholders, with the share price down 13% in that time.

Even after such a large drop in price, given close to half the companies operating in the United States' Interactive Media and Services industry have price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") below 1.5x, you may still consider Snap as a stock to potentially avoid with its 3.1x P/S ratio. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's as high as it is.

What Does Snap's Recent Performance Look Like?

Snap could be doing better as it's been growing revenue less than most other companies lately. Perhaps the market is expecting future revenue performance to undergo a reversal of fortunes, which has elevated the P/S ratio. If not, then existing shareholders may be very nervous about the viability of the share price.

What Are Revenue Growth Metrics Telling Us About The High P/S?

In order to justify its P/S ratio, Snap would need to produce impressive growth in excess of the industry.

Taking a look back first, we see that the company managed to grow revenues by a handy 11% last year. This was backed up an excellent period prior to see revenue up by 49% in total over the last three years. So we can start by confirming that the company has done a great job of growing revenues over that time.

Turning to the outlook, the next three years should generate growth of 14% each year as estimated by the analysts watching the company. Meanwhile, the rest of the industry is forecast to only expand by 12% per year, which is noticeably less attractive.

In light of this, it's understandable that Snap's P/S sits above the majority of other companies. Apparently shareholders aren't keen to offload something that is potentially eyeing a more prosperous future.

What We Can Learn From Snap's P/S?

Snap's P/S remain high even after its stock plunged. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-sales ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.
