Investors are often guided by the idea of discovering 'the next big thing', even if that means buying 'story stocks' without any revenue, let alone profit. Unfortunately, these high risk investments often have little probability of ever paying off, and many investors pay a price to learn their lesson. Loss-making companies are always racing against time to reach financial sustainability, so investors in these companies may be taking on more risk than they should.

In contrast to all that, many investors prefer to focus on companies like Live Nation Entertainment (NYSE:LYV), which has not only revenues, but also profits. While this doesn't necessarily speak to whether it's undervalued, the profitability of the business is enough to warrant some appreciation - especially if its growing.

How Fast Is Live Nation Entertainment Growing Its Earnings Per Share?

In the last three years Live Nation Entertainment's earnings per share took off; so much so that it's a bit disingenuous to use these figures to try and deduce long term estimates. Thus, it makes sense to focus on more recent growth rates, instead. Outstandingly, Live Nation Entertainment's EPS shot from US$0.66 to US$1.38, over the last year. It's not often a company can achieve year-on-year growth of 107%. That could be a sign that the business has reached a true inflection point.

Careful consideration of revenue growth and earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margins can help inform a view on the sustainability of the recent profit growth. EBIT margins for Live Nation Entertainment remained fairly unchanged over the last year, however the company should be pleased to report its revenue growth for the period of 36% to US$23b. That's progress.
