Returns On Capital Are Showing Encouraging Signs At Live Nation Entertainment (NYSE:LYV)
To find a multi-bagger stock, what are the underlying trends we should look for in a business? Typically, we'll want to notice a trend of growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and alongside that, an expanding base of capital employed. If you see this, it typically means it's a company with a great business model and plenty of profitable reinvestment opportunities. So when we looked at Live Nation Entertainment (NYSE:LYV) and its trend of ROCE, we really liked what we saw.
Return On Capital Employed (ROCE): What Is It?
If you haven't worked with ROCE before, it measures the 'return' (pre-tax profit) a company generates from capital employed in its business. The formula for this calculation on Live Nation Entertainment is:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.084 = US$688m ÷ (US$16b - US$7.6b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to September 2022).
So, Live Nation Entertainment has an ROCE of 8.4%. Even though it's in line with the industry average of 8.4%, it's still a low return by itself.

What Does the ROCE Trend For Live Nation Entertainment Tell Us?
We're glad to see that ROCE is heading in the right direction, even if it is still low at the moment. Over the last five years, returns on capital employed have risen substantially to 8.4%. The amount of capital employed has increased too, by 77%. So we're very much inspired by what we're seeing at Live Nation Entertainment thanks to its ability to profitably reinvest capital.
On a side note, Live Nation Entertainment's current liabilities are still rather high at 48% of total assets. This can bring about some risks because the company is basically operating with a rather large reliance on its suppliers or other sorts of short-term creditors. Ideally we'd like to see this reduce as that would mean fewer obligations bearing risks.
In Conclusion...
A company that is growing its returns on capital and can consistently reinvest in itself is a highly sought after trait, and that's what Live Nation Entertainment has. And with a respectable 78% awarded to those who held the stock over the last five years, you could argue that these developments are starting to get the attention they deserve. With that being said, we still think the promising fundamentals mean the company deserves some further due diligence.
Like most companies, Live Nation Entertainment does come with some risks, and we've found 2 warning signs that you should be aware of.
