Last week, PubMatic, Inc.'s (NASDAQ:PUBM) stock jumped 11%, but insiders who sold US$1.5m worth of stock in over the past year are likely to be in a better position. Selling at an average price of US$17.42, which is higher than the current price, may have been the wisest decision for these insiders as their investment would have been worth less now than when they sold.
Although we don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.
PubMatic Insider Transactions Over The Last Year
In the last twelve months, the biggest single sale by an insider was when the Co-Founder, Rajeev Goel, sold US$530k worth of shares at a price of US$20.41 per share. While we don't usually like to see insider selling, it's more concerning if the sales take place at a lower price. The good news is that this large sale was at well above current price of US$10.45. So it may not shed much light on insider confidence at current levels.

Insider Ownership
Many investors like to check how much of a company is owned by insiders. I reckon it's a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. It appears that PubMatic insiders own 15% of the company, worth about US$74m. While this is a strong but not outstanding level of insider ownership, it's enough to indicate some alignment between management and smaller shareholders.
So What Do The PubMatic Insider Transactions Indicate?
The fact that there have been no PubMatic insider transactions recently certainly doesn't bother us. Still, the insider transactions at PubMatic in the last 12 months are not very heartening. But we do like the fact that insiders own a fair chunk of the company.
