Looking at CarGurus, Inc.'s (NASDAQ:CARG ) insider transactions over the last year, we can see that insiders were net sellers. That is, there were more number of shares sold by insiders than there were purchased.

Although we don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions, logic dictates you should pay some attention to whether insiders are buying or selling shares.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At CarGurus

In the last twelve months, the biggest single sale by an insider was when the Independent Director, Greg Schwartz, sold US$301k worth of shares at a price of US$24.04 per share. That means that even when the share price was slightly below the current price of US$24.12, an insider wanted to cash in some shares. When an insider sells below the current price, it suggests that they considered that lower price to be fair. That makes us wonder what they think of the (higher) recent valuation. Please do note, however, that sellers may have a variety of reasons for selling, so we don't know for sure what they think of the stock price. This single sale was 70% of Greg Schwartz's stake. The only individual insider seller over the last year was Greg Schwartz.

For a common shareholder, it is worth checking how many shares are held by company insiders. We usually like to see fairly high levels of insider ownership. I like to see this level of insider ownership, because it increases the chances that management are thinking about the best interests of shareholders.
