Kanzhun's (NASDAQ:BZ) Returns On Capital Are Heading Higher
To find a multi-bagger stock, what are the underlying trends we should look for in a business? Firstly, we'd want to identify a growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and then alongside that, an ever-increasing base of capital employed. Basically this means that a company has profitable initiatives that it can continue to reinvest in, which is a trait of a compounding machine. With that in mind, we've noticed some promising trends at Kanzhun (NASDAQ:BZ) so let's look a bit deeper.
What Is Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)?
For those that aren't sure what ROCE is, it measures the amount of pre-tax profits a company can generate from the capital employed in its business. The formula for this calculation on Kanzhun is:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.16 = CN¥2.0b ÷ (CN¥15b - CN¥2.9b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to September 2022).
Therefore, Kanzhun has an ROCE of 16%. On its own, that's a standard return, however it's much better than the 5.6% generated by the Interactive Media and Services industry.

So How Is Kanzhun's ROCE Trending?
The fact that Kanzhun is now generating some pre-tax profits from its prior investments is very encouraging. About two years ago the company was generating losses but things have turned around because it's now earning 16% on its capital. In addition to that, Kanzhun is employing 356% more capital than previously which is expected of a company that's trying to break into profitability. This can tell us that the company has plenty of reinvestment opportunities that are able to generate higher returns.
One more thing to note, Kanzhun has decreased current liabilities to 19% of total assets over this period, which effectively reduces the amount of funding from suppliers or short-term creditors. Therefore we can rest assured that the growth in ROCE is a result of the business' fundamental improvements, rather than a cooking class featuring this company's books.
In Conclusion...
Overall, Kanzhun gets a big tick from us thanks in most part to the fact that it is now profitable and is reinvesting in its business. Given the stock has declined 19% in the last year, this could be a good investment if the valuation and other metrics are also appealing. With that in mind, we believe the promising trends warrant this stock for further investigation.
