More Unpleasant Surprises Could Be In Store For Bilibili Inc.'s (NASDAQ:BILI) Shares After Tumbling 27%
Bilibili Inc. (NASDAQ:BILI) shares have had a horrible month, losing 27% after a relatively good period beforehand. Looking at the bigger picture, even after this poor month the stock is up 47% in the last year.
In spite of the heavy fall in price, given close to half the companies operating in the United States' Interactive Media and Services industry have price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") below 0.9x, you may still consider Bilibili as a stock to potentially avoid with its 1.8x P/S ratio. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's as high as it is.

How Bilibili Has Been Performing
There hasn't been much to differentiate Bilibili's and the industry's revenue growth lately. Perhaps the market is expecting future revenue performance to improve, justifying the currently elevated P/S. If not, then existing shareholders may be a little nervous about the viability of the share price.

Bilibili's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver solid growth, and importantly, perform better than the industry.
Taking a look back first, we see that the company grew revenue by an impressive 19% last year. Pleasingly, revenue has also lifted 38% in aggregate from three years ago, thanks to the last 12 months of growth. Accordingly, shareholders would have definitely welcomed those medium-term rates of revenue growth.
Turning to the outlook, the next three years should generate growth of 11% each year as estimated by the analysts watching the company. With the industry predicted to deliver 12% growth per year, the company is positioned for a comparable revenue result.
With this information, we find it interesting that Bilibili is trading at a high P/S compared to the industry. It seems most investors are ignoring the fairly average growth expectations and are willing to pay up for exposure to the stock. These shareholders may be setting themselves up for disappointment if the P/S falls to levels more in line with the growth outlook.
The Key Takeaway
Bilibili's P/S remain high even after its stock plunged. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-sales ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.
Given Bilibili's future revenue forecasts are in line with the wider industry, the fact that it trades at an elevated P/S is somewhat surprising. The fact that the revenue figures aren't setting the world alight has us doubtful that the company's elevated P/S can be sustainable for the long term. Unless the company can jump ahead of the rest of the industry in the short-term, it'll be a challenge to maintain the share price at current levels.
