Over the past year, many Activision Blizzard, Inc. (NASDAQ:ATVI) insiders sold a significant stake in the company which may have piqued investors' interest. Knowing whether insiders are buying is usually more helpful when evaluating insider transactions, as insider selling can have various explanations. However, if numerous insiders are selling, shareholders should investigate more.

While insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing, logic dictates you should pay some attention to whether insiders are buying or selling shares.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Activision Blizzard

In the last twelve months, the biggest single sale by an insider was when the President & COO, Daniel Alegre, sold US$2.0m worth of shares at a price of US$93.68 per share. While insider selling is a negative, to us, it is more negative if the shares are sold at a lower price. It's of some comfort that this sale was conducted at a price well above the current share price, which is US$69.69. So it may not tell us anything about how insiders feel about the current share price.

In total, Activision Blizzard insiders sold more than they bought over the last year. The chart below shows insider transactions (by companies and individuals) over the last year. Insider Ownership

I like to look at how many shares insiders own in a company, to help inform my view of how aligned they are with insiders. I reckon it's a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. It's great to see that Activision Blizzard insiders own 0.7% of the company, worth about US$379m. This kind of significant ownership by insiders does generally increase the chance that the company is run in the interest of all shareholders.

So What Do The Activision Blizzard Insider Transactions Indicate?

The fact that there have been no Activision Blizzard insider transactions recently certainly doesn't bother us. It's heartening that insiders own plenty of stock, but we'd like to see more insider buying, since the last year of Activision Blizzard insider transactions don't fill us with confidence.
