Lacklustre Performance Is Driving AMC Networks Inc.'s (NASDAQ:AMCX) 27% Price Drop
AMC Networks Inc. (NASDAQ:AMCX) shareholders won't be pleased to see that the share price has had a very rough month, dropping 27% and undoing the prior period's positive performance. The drop over the last 30 days has capped off a tough year for shareholders, with the share price down 29% in that time.
Following the heavy fall in price, AMC Networks' price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.1x might make it look like a buy right now compared to the Media industry in the United States, where around half of the companies have P/S ratios above 0.9x and even P/S above 3x are quite common. However, the P/S might be low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

What Does AMC Networks' Recent Performance Look Like?
AMC Networks could be doing better as its revenue has been going backwards lately while most other companies have been seeing positive revenue growth. Perhaps the P/S remains low as investors think the prospects of strong revenue growth aren't on the horizon. If this is the case, then existing shareholders will probably struggle to get excited about the future direction of the share price.

There's an inherent assumption that a company should underperform the industry for P/S ratios like AMC Networks' to be considered reasonable.
In reviewing the last year of financials, we were disheartened to see the company's revenues fell to the tune of 17%. This means it has also seen a slide in revenue over the longer-term as revenue is down 12% in total over the last three years. Accordingly, shareholders would have felt downbeat about the medium-term rates of revenue growth.
Looking ahead now, revenue is anticipated to slump, contracting by 2.5% per annum during the coming three years according to the eight analysts following the company. That's not great when the rest of the industry is expected to grow by 5.0% per annum.
With this in consideration, we find it intriguing that AMC Networks' P/S is closely matching its industry peers. However, shrinking revenues are unlikely to lead to a stable P/S over the longer term. Even just maintaining these prices could be difficult to achieve as the weak outlook is weighing down the shares.
What We Can Learn From AMC Networks' P/S?
AMC Networks' recently weak share price has pulled its P/S back below other Media companies. It's argued the price-to-sales ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.
It's clear to see that AMC Networks maintains its low P/S on the weakness of its forecast for sliding revenue, as expected. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in revenue isn't great enough to justify a higher P/S ratio. It's hard to see the share price rising strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
