In the last year, multiple insiders have substantially increased their holdings of Sonoco Products Company (NYSE:SON) stock, indicating that insiders' optimism about the company's prospects has increased.

While we would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing, logic dictates you should pay some attention to whether insiders are buying or selling shares.

Sonoco Products Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider purchase was by President Robert Coker for US$930k worth of shares, at about US$46.48 per share. That means that an insider was happy to buy shares at around the current price of US$47.13. While their view may have changed since the purchase was made, this does at least suggest they have had confidence in the company's future. While we always like to see insider buying, it's less meaningful if the purchases were made at much lower prices, as the opportunity they saw may have passed. In this case we're pleased to report that the insider purchases were made at close to current prices.

Over the last year, we can see that insiders have bought 47.00k shares worth US$2.2m. But insiders sold 13.66k shares worth US$699k. In total, Sonoco Products insiders bought more than they sold over the last year. You can see the insider transactions (by companies and individuals) over the last year depicted in the chart below.
