Ryerson Holding Corporation's (NYSE:RYI) Shares Lagging The Industry But So Is The Business
You may think that with a price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.1x Ryerson Holding Corporation (NYSE:RYI) is a stock worth checking out, seeing as almost half of all the Metals and Mining companies in the United States have P/S ratios greater than 1.2x and even P/S higher than 5x aren't out of the ordinary. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the reduced P/S.

What Does Ryerson Holding's Recent Performance Look Like?
Ryerson Holding could be doing better as its revenue has been going backwards lately while most other companies have been seeing positive revenue growth. It seems that many are expecting the poor revenue performance to persist, which has repressed the P/S ratio. If this is the case, then existing shareholders will probably struggle to get excited about the future direction of the share price.

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as low as Ryerson Holding's is when the company's growth is on track to lag the industry.
Taking a look back first, the company's revenue growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 11%. As a result, revenue from three years ago have also fallen 5.8% overall. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing revenue over that time.
Looking ahead now, revenue is anticipated to slump, contracting by 0.6% during the coming year according to the two analysts following the company. Meanwhile, the broader industry is forecast to expand by 20%, which paints a poor picture.
With this in consideration, we find it intriguing that Ryerson Holding's P/S is closely matching its industry peers. Nonetheless, there's no guarantee the P/S has reached a floor yet with revenue going in reverse. Even just maintaining these prices could be difficult to achieve as the weak outlook is weighing down the shares.
What Does Ryerson Holding's P/S Mean For Investors?
Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-sales ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.
As we suspected, our examination of Ryerson Holding's analyst forecasts revealed that its outlook for shrinking revenue is contributing to its low P/S. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in revenue isn't great enough to justify a higher P/S ratio. Unless there's material change, it's hard to envision a situation where the stock price will rise drastically.
