Myers Industries, Inc. (NYSE:MYE) Stocks Shoot Up 27% But Its P/E Still Looks Reasonable

Myers Industries, Inc. (NYSE:MYE) shareholders would be excited to see that the share price has had a great month, posting a 27% gain and recovering from prior weakness. Unfortunately, the gains of the last month did little to right the losses of the last year with the stock still down 29% over that time.

After such a large jump in price, Myers Industries may be sending very bearish signals at the moment with a price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 43.1x, since almost half of all companies in the United States have P/E ratios under 17x and even P/E's lower than 10x are not unusual. However, the P/E might be quite high for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

While the market has experienced earnings growth lately, Myers Industries' earnings have gone into reverse gear, which is not great. It might be that many expect the dour earnings performance to recover substantially, which has kept the P/E from collapsing. If not, then existing shareholders may be extremely nervous about the viability of the share price.

Is There Enough Growth For Myers Industries?

There's an inherent assumption that a company should far outperform the market for P/E ratios like Myers Industries' to be considered reasonable.

Taking a look back first, the company's earnings per share growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 74%. As a result, earnings from three years ago have also fallen 77% overall. Therefore, it's fair to say the earnings growth recently has been undesirable for the company.

Turning to the outlook, the next year should generate growth of 306% as estimated by the lone analyst watching the company. With the market only predicted to deliver 13%, the company is positioned for a stronger earnings result.

In light of this, it's understandable that Myers Industries' P/E sits above the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are expecting this strong future growth and are willing to pay more for the stock.

The Bottom Line On Myers Industries' P/E

Shares in Myers Industries have built up some good momentum lately, which has really inflated its P/E. We'd say the price-to-earnings ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.

We've established that Myers Industries maintains its high P/E on the strength of its forecast growth being higher than the wider market, as expected. At this stage investors feel the potential for a deterioration in earnings isn't great enough to justify a lower P/E ratio. Unless these conditions change, they will continue to provide strong support to the share price.

It is also worth noting that we have found 4 warning signs for Myers Industries (1 is potentially serious!) that you need to take into consideration.
