MP Materials Corp. (NYSE:MP) Just Released Its First-Quarter Results And Analysts Are Updating Their Estimates

Following the result, the analysts have updated their earnings model, and it would be good to know whether they think there's been a strong change in the company's prospects, or if it's business as usual. There was no major change to the US$26.42average price target, suggesting that the adjustments to revenue and earnings are not expected to have a long-term impact on the business. It could also be instructive to look at the range of analyst estimates, to evaluate how different the outlier opinions are from the mean. The most optimistic MP Materials analyst has a price target of US$32.00 per share, while the most pessimistic values it at US$18.00. These price targets show that analysts do have some differing views on the business, but the estimates do not vary enough to suggest to us that some are betting on wild success or utter failure.
These estimates are interesting, but it can be useful to paint some more broad strokes when seeing how forecasts compare, both to the MP Materials' past performance and to peers in the same industry. The analysts are definitely expecting MP Materials' growth to accelerate, with the forecast 29% annualised growth to the end of 2025 ranking favourably alongside historical growth of 7.2% per annum over the past five years. By contrast, our data suggests that other companies (with analyst coverage) in a similar industry are forecast to grow their revenue at 4.3% per year. Factoring in the forecast acceleration in revenue, it's pretty clear that MP Materials is expected to grow much faster than its industry.
The Bottom Line
The most important thing to take away is that the analysts reconfirmed their loss per share estimates for next year. They also downgraded MP Materials' revenue estimates, but industry data suggests that it is expected to grow faster than the wider industry. With that said, earnings are more important to the long-term value of the business. The consensus price target held steady at US$26.42, with the latest estimates not enough to have an impact on their price targets.
Keeping that in mind, we still think that the longer term trajectory of the business is much more important for investors to consider. We have forecasts for MP Materials going out to 2027, and you can see them free on our platform here.
