The five-year decline in earnings for Constellium NYSE:CSTM) isn't encouraging, but shareholders are still up 107% over that period

The most you can lose on any stock (assuming you don't use leverage) is 100% of your money. But when you pick a company that is really flourishing, you can make more than 100%. For example, the Constellium SE (NYSE:CSTM) share price has soared 107% in the last half decade. Most would be very happy with that. But it's down 8.9% in the last week.

While the stock has fallen 8.9% this week, it's worth focusing on the longer term and seeing if the stocks historical returns have been driven by the underlying fundamentals.

While the efficient markets hypothesis continues to be taught by some, it has been proven that markets are over-reactive dynamic systems, and investors are not always rational. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.

During five years of share price growth, Constellium actually saw its EPS drop 14% per year.

This means it's unlikely the market is judging the company based on earnings growth. Since the change in EPS doesn't seem to correlate with the change in share price, it's worth taking a look at other metrics.

On the other hand, Constellium's revenue is growing nicely, at a compound rate of 8.2% over the last five years. In that case, the company may be sacrificing current earnings per share to drive growth.

A Different Perspective

Constellium shareholders have received returns of 24% over twelve months, which isn't far from the general market return. Most would be happy with a gain, and it helps that the year's return is actually better than the average return over five years, which was 16%. It is possible that management foresight will bring growth well into the future, even if the share price slows down. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. To that end, you should be aware of the 1 warning sign we've spotted with Constellium .
