Insiders At Unum Group Sold US$15m In Stock, Alluding To Potential Weakness
Many Unum Group (NYSE:UNM) insiders ditched their stock over the past year, which may be of interest to the company's shareholders. When analyzing insider transactions, it is usually more valuable to know whether insiders are buying versus knowing if they are selling, as the latter sends an ambiguous message. However, when multiple insiders sell stock over a specific duration, shareholders should take notice as that could possibly be a red flag.
While we would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing, logic dictates you should pay some attention to whether insiders are buying or selling shares.
The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Unum Group
The President, Richard McKenney, made the biggest insider sale in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for US$4.1m worth of shares at a price of US$82.52 each. That means that an insider was selling shares at around the current price of US$79.70. While we don't usually like to see insider selling, it's more concerning if the sales take place at a lower price. We note that this sale took place at around the current price, so it isn't a major concern, though it's hardly a good sign.

Unum Group Insiders Are Selling The Stock
The last quarter saw substantial insider selling of Unum Group shares. In total, Executive Vice President of People & Communications Elizabeth A. Ahmed dumped US$800k worth of shares in that time, and we didn't record any purchases whatsoever. This may suggest that some insiders think that the shares are not cheap.
Insider Ownership
Many investors like to check how much of a company is owned by insiders. I reckon it's a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. Unum Group insiders own 0.8% of the company, currently worth about US$109m based on the recent share price. I like to see this level of insider ownership, because it increases the chances that management are thinking about the best interests of shareholders.
What Might The Insider Transactions At Unum Group Tell Us?
An insider sold stock recently, but they haven't been buying. And even if we look at the last year, we didn't see any purchases. But it is good to see that Unum Group is growing earnings.
