The Travelers Companies (NYSE:TRV) Share Price Has Gained 31% And Shareholders Are Hoping For More
When you buy and hold a stock for the long term, you definitely want it to provide a positive return. Better yet, you'd like to see the share price move up more than the market average. Unfortunately for shareholders, while the The Travelers Companies, Inc. (NYSE:TRV) share price is up 31% in the last five years, that's less than the market return. Zooming in, the stock is up just 3.4% in the last year.

To paraphrase Benjamin Graham: Over the short term the market is a voting machine, but over the long term it's a weighing machine. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.
During five years of share price growth, Travelers Companies actually saw its EPS drop 0.8% per year.
So it's hard to argue that the earnings per share are the best metric to judge the company, as it may not be optimized for profits at this point. Since the change in EPS doesn't seem to correlate with the change in share price, it's worth taking a look at other metrics.
On the other hand, Travelers Companies' revenue is growing nicely, at a compound rate of 4.0% over the last five years. It's quite possible that management are prioritizing revenue growth over EPS growth at the moment.

What About Dividends?
As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off. Arguably, the TSR gives a more comprehensive picture of the return generated by a stock. In the case of Travelers Companies, it has a TSR of 47% for the last 5 years. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. The dividends paid by the company have thusly boosted the total shareholder return.
A Different Perspective
Travelers Companies provided a TSR of 6.3% over the last twelve months. But that was short of the market average. If we look back over five years, the returns are even better, coming in at 8% per year for five years. Maybe the share price is just taking a breather while the business executes on its growth strategy.
