United-Guardian's (NASDAQ:UG) Upcoming Dividend Will Be Larger Than Last Year's

Published
NasdaqGM:UG

The board of United-Guardian, Inc. (NASDAQ:UG) has announced that the dividend on 31st of July will be increased to $0.35, which will be 250% higher than last year's payment of $0.10 which covered the same period. Based on this payment, the dividend yield for the company will be 2.9%, which is fairly typical for the industry.

While the dividend yield is important for income investors, it is also important to consider any large share price moves, as this will generally outweigh any gains from distributions. Investors will be pleased to see that United-Guardian's stock price has increased by 46% in the last 3 months, which is good for shareholders and can also explain a decrease in the dividend yield.

United-Guardian Doesn't Earn Enough To Cover Its Payments

We like a dividend to be consistent over the long term, so checking whether it is sustainable is important. Based on the last payment, United-Guardian was quite comfortably earning enough to cover the dividend. This means that a large portion of its earnings are being retained to grow the business.

EPS is set to fall by 9.4% over the next 12 months if recent trends continue. If the dividend continues along recent trends, we estimate the payout ratio could reach 108%, which could put the dividend in jeopardy if the company's earnings don't improve.

Dividend Volatility

Although the company has a long dividend history, it has been cut at least once in the last 10 years. Since 2014, the annual payment back then was $1.00, compared to the most recent full-year payment of $0.35. The dividend has shrunk at around 10.0% a year during that period. A company that decreases its dividend over time generally isn't what we are looking for.

Dividend Growth May Be Hard To Come By

Given that the track record hasn't been stellar, we really want to see earnings per share growing over time. In the last five years, United-Guardian's earnings per share has shrunk at approximately 9.4% per annum. Declining earnings will inevitably lead to the company paying a lower dividend in line with lower profits.

In Summary

Overall, we always like to see the dividend being raised, but we don't think United-Guardian will make a great income stock. In the past, the payments have been unstable, but over the short term the dividend could be reliable, with the company generating enough cash to cover it. We don't think United-Guardian is a great stock to add to your portfolio if income is your focus.

Market movements attest to how highly valued a consistent dividend policy is compared to one which is more unpredictable. Meanwhile, despite the importance of dividend payments, they are not the only factors our readers should know when assessing a company. To that end, United-Guardian has 3 warning signs (and 1 which makes us a bit uncomfortable) we think you should know about.
