ResMed Insiders Sell US$6.7m Of Stock, Possibly Signalling Caution
Many ResMed Inc. (NYSE:RMD) insiders ditched their stock over the past year, which may be of interest to the company's shareholders. When evaluating insider transactions, knowing whether insiders are buying versus if they selling is usually more beneficial, as the latter can be open to many interpretations. However, when multiple insiders sell stock over a specific duration, shareholders should take notice as that could possibly be a red flag.
While we would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At ResMed
In the last twelve months, the biggest single sale by an insider was when the Chief Financial Officer, Brett Sandercock, sold US$2.9m worth of shares at a price of US$233 per share. While we don't usually like to see insider selling, it's more concerning if the sales take place at a lower price. The silver lining is that this sell-down took place above the latest price (US$159). So it may not tell us anything about how insiders feel about the current share price.
In the last year ResMed insiders didn't buy any company stock. You can see the insider transactions (by companies and individuals) over the last year depicted in the chart below. By clicking on the graph below, you can see the precise details of each insider transaction!

Insider Ownership Of ResMed
Another way to test the alignment between the leaders of a company and other shareholders is to look at how many shares they own. Usually, the higher the insider ownership, the more likely it is that insiders will be incentivised to build the company for the long term. ResMed insiders own 0.9% of the company, currently worth about US$209m based on the recent share price. I like to see this level of insider ownership, because it increases the chances that management are thinking about the best interests of shareholders.
What Might The Insider Transactions At ResMed Tell Us?
The fact that there have been no ResMed insider transactions recently certainly doesn't bother us. It's heartening that insiders own plenty of stock, but we'd like to see more insider buying, since the last year of ResMed insider transactions don't fill us with confidence. Of course, the future is what matters most. So if you are interested in ResMed, you should check out this free report on analyst forecasts for the company.
