Market Cool On Molina Healthcare, Inc.'s (NYSE:MOH) Earnings
When close to half the companies in the United States have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") above 18x, you may consider Molina Healthcare, Inc. (NYSE:MOH) as an attractive investment with its 15.5x P/E ratio. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.
Molina Healthcare certainly has been doing a good job lately as it's been growing earnings more than most other companies. One possibility is that the P/E is low because investors think this strong earnings performance might be less impressive moving forward. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

How Is Molina Healthcare's Growth Trending?
The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as low as Molina Healthcare's is when the company's growth is on track to lag the market.
Taking a look back first, we see that the company managed to grow earnings per share by a handy 8.6% last year. The latest three year period has also seen an excellent 86% overall rise in EPS, aided somewhat by its short-term performance. Therefore, it's fair to say the earnings growth recently has been superb for the company.
Turning to the outlook, the next three years should generate growth of 13% per year as estimated by the twelve analysts watching the company. With the market only predicted to deliver 11% per year, the company is positioned for a stronger earnings result.
With this information, we find it odd that Molina Healthcare is trading at a P/E lower than the market. Apparently some shareholders are doubtful of the forecasts and have been accepting significantly lower selling prices.
What We Can Learn From Molina Healthcare's P/E?
While the price-to-earnings ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of earnings expectations.
Our examination of Molina Healthcare's analyst forecasts revealed that its superior earnings outlook isn't contributing to its P/E anywhere near as much as we would have predicted. There could be some major unobserved threats to earnings preventing the P/E ratio from matching the positive outlook. It appears many are indeed anticipating earnings instability, because these conditions should normally provide a boost to the share price.
