It's common for many investors, especially those who are inexperienced, to buy shares in companies with a good story even if these companies are loss-making. Sometimes these stories can cloud the minds of investors, leading them to invest with their emotions rather than on the merit of good company fundamentals. A loss-making company is yet to prove itself with profit, and eventually the inflow of external capital may dry up.

Despite being in the age of tech-stock blue-sky investing, many investors still adopt a more traditional strategy; buying shares in profitable companies like Globus Medical (NYSE:GMED). Even if this company is fairly valued by the market, investors would agree that generating consistent profits will continue to provide Globus Medical with the means to add long-term value to shareholders.

Globus Medical's Earnings Per Share Are Growing

The market is a voting machine in the short term, but a weighing machine in the long term, so you'd expect share price to follow earnings per share (EPS) outcomes eventually. That means EPS growth is considered a real positive by most successful long-term investors. Globus Medical managed to grow EPS by 6.6% per year, over three years. This may not be setting the world alight, but it does show that EPS is on the upwards trend.

It's often helpful to take a look at earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) margins, as well as revenue growth, to get another take on the quality of the company's growth. The good news is that Globus Medical is growing revenues, and EBIT margins improved by 2.8 percentage points to 23%, over the last year. Both of which are great metrics to check off for potential growth.

Are Globus Medical Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

Since Globus Medical has a market capitalisation of US$6.0b, we wouldn't expect insiders to hold a large percentage of shares. But thanks to their investment in the company, it's pleasing to see that there are still incentives to align their actions with the shareholders. We note that their impressive stake in the company is worth US$1.4b. That equates to 23% of the company, making insiders powerful and aligned with other shareholders. Very encouraging.

It's good to see that insiders are invested in the company, but are remuneration levels reasonable? Well, based on the CEO pay, you'd argue that they are indeed. For companies with market capitalisations between US$4.0b and US$12b, like Globus Medical, the median CEO pay is around US$8.0m.

The CEO of Globus Medical only received US$1.9m in total compensation for the year ending December 2021. First impressions seem to indicate a compensation policy that is favourable to shareholders. CEO remuneration levels are not the most important metric for investors, but when the pay is modest, that does support enhanced alignment between the CEO and the ordinary shareholders. It can also be a sign of good governance, more generally.

Is Globus Medical Worth Keeping An Eye On?

As previously touched on, Globus Medical is a growing business, which is encouraging. Earnings growth might be the main attraction for Globus Medical, but the fun does not stop there. Boasting both modest CEO pay and considerable insider ownership, you'd argue this one is worthy of the watchlist, at least. While we've looked at the quality of the earnings, we haven't yet done any work to value the stock. So if you like to buy cheap, you may want to check if Globus Medical is trading on a high P/E or a low P/E, relative to its industry.
