The Returns At DENTSPLY SIRONA (NASDAQ:XRAY) Aren't Growing
What trends should we look for it we want to identify stocks that can multiply in value over the long term? Ideally, a business will show two trends; firstly a growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and secondly, an increasing amount of capital employed. Basically this means that a company has profitable initiatives that it can continue to reinvest in, which is a trait of a compounding machine. However, after investigating DENTSPLY SIRONA (NASDAQ:XRAY), we don't think it's current trends fit the mold of a multi-bagger.
What Is Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)?
For those who don't know, ROCE is a measure of a company's yearly pre-tax profit (its return), relative to the capital employed in the business. To calculate this metric for DENTSPLY SIRONA, this is the formula:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.051 = US$319m ÷ (US$7.7b - US$1.4b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to March 2023).
Thus, DENTSPLY SIRONA has an ROCE of 5.1%. In absolute terms, that's a low return and it also under-performs the Medical Equipment industry average of 9.1%.

SWOT Analysis for DENTSPLY SIRONA
- Debt is well covered by earnings.
- Dividend is low compared to the top 25% of dividend payers in the Medical Equipment market.
- Expected to breakeven next year.
- Has sufficient cash runway for more than 3 years based on current free cash flows.
- Good value based on P/S ratio and estimated fair value.
- Debt is not well covered by operating cash flow.
- Paying a dividend but company is unprofitable.
The Trend Of ROCE
We're a bit concerned with the trends, because the business is applying 34% less capital than it was five years ago and returns on that capital have stayed flat. To us that doesn't look like a multi-bagger because the company appears to be selling assets and it's returns aren't increasing. In addition to that, since the ROCE doesn't scream "quality" at 5.1%, it's hard to get excited about these developments.
The Bottom Line
Overall, we're not ecstatic to see DENTSPLY SIRONA reducing the amount of capital it employs in the business. And in the last five years, the stock has given away 10% so the market doesn't look too hopeful on these trends strengthening any time soon. All in all, the inherent trends aren't typical of multi-baggers, so if that's what you're after, we think you might have more luck elsewhere.
