It's Down 52% But ThermoGenesis Holdings, Inc. (NASDAQ:THMO) Could Be Riskier Than It Looks

ThermoGenesis Holdings, Inc. (NASDAQ:THMO) shareholders won't be pleased to see that the share price has had a very rough month, dropping 52% and undoing the prior period's positive performance. The recent drop completes a disastrous twelve months for shareholders, who are sitting on a 90% loss during that time.

Following the heavy fall in price, ThermoGenesis Holdings' price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.4x might make it look like a strong buy right now compared to the wider Medical Equipment industry in the United States, where around half of the companies have P/S ratios above 3.5x and even P/S above 8x are quite common. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so limited.

How Has ThermoGenesis Holdings Performed Recently?

Recent times have been advantageous for ThermoGenesis Holdings as its revenues have been rising faster than most other companies. It might be that many expect the strong revenue performance to degrade substantially, which has repressed the share price, and thus the P/S ratio. If not, then existing shareholders have reason to be quite optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

Do Revenue Forecasts Match The Low P/S Ratio?

ThermoGenesis Holdings' P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver very poor growth or even falling revenue, and importantly, perform much worse than the industry.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered a decent 13% gain to the company's revenues. However, this wasn't enough as the latest three year period has seen an unpleasant 20% overall drop in revenue. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing revenue over that time.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the lone analyst covering the company suggest revenue should grow by 41% per year over the next three years. With the industry only predicted to deliver 8.9% per annum, the company is positioned for a stronger revenue result.

With this information, we find it odd that ThermoGenesis Holdings is trading at a P/S lower than the industry. Apparently some shareholders are doubtful of the forecasts and have been accepting significantly lower selling prices.

The Key Takeaway

ThermoGenesis Holdings' P/S looks about as weak as its stock price lately. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-sales ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.

To us, it seems ThermoGenesis Holdings currently trades on a significantly depressed P/S given its forecasted revenue growth is higher than the rest of its industry. There could be some major risk factors that are placing downward pressure on the P/S ratio. At least price risks look to be very low, but investors seem to think future revenues could see a lot of volatility.
